Gopal Chandra Bhattacharya is an Indian entomologist and naturalist who has spent most of his career at the Bose Institute in Kolkata. He does not have a full university degree. In 1981, the University of Calcutta awarded him an honorary doctorate of science several months before his death. He was awarded the Ananda Puraskar for Bengali literature in 1968 and the top prize for Bengali literature, Rabindra Puraskar, in 1975. He published his first research paper in 1932, on the living conditions in the plant body. Later, he also published work on bioluminescence and other botanical topics, but gradually his interest turned to entomology. He has become an expert photographer and shoots a wide variety of ants, spiders, small bats and tadpoles. In total, he has published 22 articles in English, including in journals such as the Natural History of the American Museum of Natural History.
