He was arrested later that year after an unsuccessful attempt to kidnap a six-year-old boy from a movie theater. Dodd wrote the details of his murders in a diary the police found. After pleading guilty to murder, he received the death penalty. After declining an automatic appeal, his January 5, 1993 suspension was the first legal hang in the United States since 1965
